As the BP oil spill continues to destroy marine life and ruin livelihoods along the Gulf Coast, conservationists, energy companies and diplomats are preparing for the next big showdown over drilling — this time in the Arctic, says news.discovery.com. 
According to guardian.co.uk, when a team of Russian polar explorers in mini-submarines planted a flag on the seabed below the North Pole in August 2007, the world responded with scorn and outrage. 
Arctic sea ice coverage was the highest in 10 years at the end of March. Then, it decreased at the fastest rate since satellite records started (which began in 1979) during the month of May. It was very near the record low May coverage of 2006 by the end of the month.
