Tainted North Pole water leads to lawsuit against Flint Hills refinery

FAIRBANKS (newsminer.com)— A North Pole man filed suit against the current and former owners of the Flint Hills oil refinery because the chemical sulfolane entered public water supplies from the refinery.

James West filed the lawsuit late Wednesday afternoon against Flint Hills Resources LLC, which has owned the refinery since April 1, 2004; and Williams Alaska Petroleum Inc., which previously owned the refinery. more »

It was satellites that revealed in September 2007 a record minimum ice coverage in the region — the result of a massive summer melt. Tiny Kivalina, Alaska, does not have a hotel, a restaurant or a movie theater. But it has a very big lawsuit that might affect the way the nation deals with climate change, nytimes.com says

Kivalina, an Inupiat Eskimo village of 400 perched on a barrier island north of the Arctic Circle, is accusing two dozen fuel and utility companies of helping to cause the climate change that it says is accelerating the island’s erosion. more »

Arctic melting: greenhouse effect blamed

Scientists at NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Centre, which have monitored the ice via satellites since 1978, say the total Arctic ice in 2005 will cover the smallest area since they started measuring. more »

BP Would Like To Explore For Oil, Gas In Russian Arctic – CEO

LONDON (Dow Jones)–BP PLC (BP) would like the opportunity to expand its presence in Russia to explore for oil and gas in the country’s Arctic region, Chief Executive Tony Hayward said Thursday.

“We have worked for decades in areas such as the North Slope of Alaska, the Canadian Arctic and Northern Norway,” Hayward said in a speech to the Moscow Academy of National Economy, which was posted on BP’s Web site. “BP has also been very active in the offshore Arctic regions, which represent an important new frontier for the industry.”

“Building on this expertise, we would certainly welcome the opportunity to deploy our technology and skills to explore and produce Arctic resources in Russia as well,” he said. more »
