Scientists: Arctic caibou disappearing

Melting IceAccording to recent surveys conducted on two of the Arctic’s major caribou herds in the Canadian North, caribou may just be heading the same way as the northern cod, which suffered near extinction and resulted in the closing of the cod fishery in 1992. And with the drastic decline in the Arctic Caribou, aboriginals are having to rethink previous assumptions on the animals and how long it will be around. more »

Commerical fishing ban in Arctic set for Dec. 3rd

Melting IcebergIn August, American Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, approved a plan that will see a large part of the Arctic remain off-limits to commercial fishing. Federal officials have announced that that plan will go into effect the 3rd of December. more »

 

Canadian high school student heads to the Arctic

While Bonita LeBlanc, a 16 year old student from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia Canada, has been helping out with Arctic research for the past two years, the teen has never herself been to the Arctic. Well, that is about to change.

For the past couple of years, LeBlanc has been helping Arctic researchers track ocean currents by sending bottles with messages in them to the Arctic. This week she is heading to the North and will be dropping a few bottles into the Arctic sea herself. more »

Canada’s Northern Watch program underway again in Arctic

Melting IcebergCanadian military scientists once again have plans in place to monitor any ships approaching the Northwest Passage. The monitoring of the approaches is part of the Canadian federal Northern Watch program. The program was put in place to tests any surveillance devices that the country uses to keep an eye out for foreign ships and any other vessels sailing the Arctic waterway. Northern Watch was launched back in 2008, but because of logistical issues the program was scaled back. more »

 

Canada and Greenland agree to protect shared polar bears

Lone BearIt looks like some Arctic polar bears that call both Canada and Greenland home will be receiving some protection from both countries. Official in both Canada and Greenland have announced that the two countries have reached an agreement on several measures that are aimed at the protection of populations of polar bears that are shared by the two countries. The bears tend to travel between Nunavut and Greenland. more »
