Canadian government backs out of pipeline: or does it?

Oct
28

PipelineAccording to an article in the National Post, the Canadian government has decided against investing any money in the $15.2 billion dollar Mackenzie Valley Pipeline. The article doesn’t say who their sources are, just that last week the powers-that-be decided not to provide a “major financial assistance package” to the pipeline project, despite the fact that the government has supported the project in the past.

But the Post is also reporting that Canadian Environment Minister Jim Prentice has stated that there hasn’t been a final decision made when it comes to the pipeline project and whether or not the Canadian government will be investing in it. So it is a bit unclear at this point, exactly what is going on with the project, whether it will go forward or is halted in its tracks.

Imperial Oil Ltd., the main partner in the pipeline project is still 100% committed to the development of the pipeline, and spokesperson Pius Rolheiser says that they haven’t heard anything new in regards to the financial package that they were offered by the Canadian federal government several months back.

He also says that talks are still continuing between Ottawa and the pipeline’s backers, Imperial Oil Ltd., ExxonMobil Corp, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and the Aboriginal Pipeline Group. TransCanada Corp., a natural gas shipper, has an investment in the Aboriginal Pipeline Group, and is therefore also involved in the process. The APG speaks on behalf of any aboriginal groups who find themselves on the projects proposed route.
