Moored boat sinks off of Alaska

The Monarch, a 166 foot oil-supply boat, sank in Cook Inlet, Alaska on Thursday morning.  The moored vessel started taking on water after it bumped into Granite Point platform.  The platform is owned by Chevron Corp, while the Monarch itself is owned by Ocean Marine Services Inc., which is based out of Kirkland Washington.

Critics wonder at the true need for a “road to nowhere”

Critics of an Alaska project that Congress is all set to approve are dubbing it the “road to nowhere”. A massive public lands bill is all set to reach the final Senate vote today and some environmentalists are saying that the passing of the bill could be disastrous to some Arctic wildlife.  One of things that could get the okay is a project that would see the building of a gravel road straight through a national wild life refuge in Alaska. Several hundred thousand migratory birds and salmon call the refuge home, along with a multitude of other Arctic animals including the brown bear, caribou and sea otters. more »

 

Oil spills in the Arctic contained

Christmas day brought more than just presents from Santa to the Northern Slope of Alaska.  It has been announced that there had been a major oil spill at the ConocoPhillips Kuparuk oil field in Alaska on December 25th.  In fact, it was one of the largest oil spills the Northern Slope has ever seen according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). more »

Arctic on Bush’s mind as his term winds down

In what will most likely be one of his last acts as president of the United States, George Bush has signed off on a directive in dealing with what has become known as the Arctic issue.   On Monday he issued the directive indicating the United States’ interest in the Arctic, in particular the region’s oil and natural gas resources.  The last directive that was issued in regards to the Arctic was in 1994. more »

Today the case of Coeur Alaska Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council will appear before the Supreme Court of America and the outcome could have a long lasting affect on the mining trade in the United States. more »

Alaska pipeline: good for the US, bad for Canada

A Calgary-based consulting firm is not mincing words when it comes to the possible affect the Alaska pipeline could have on Canada’s natural gas industry and offshore drilling projects.  It has described the Alaska pipeline as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” stating that once it is built, it will force Canada’s natural gas producers into seeking out other export markets besides North America.

Lowering oil prices result in Petro-Hunt relinquishing Alaska lease

While lowering gas prices are helping people out at the pumps and there is no argument that it is much easier on pocket books to heat houses, not everyone is happy about the low cost of fuel, most prominently gas companies.  One of those companies, Petro-Hunt has decided to retract their lease of federal land located on Alaska’s North Slope, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. more »

Trooper alleges political interference in drug case

Sherry L. Johnston, Levi Johnston’s mother, was arrested December 18th by Alaska State Troopers on drug related charges.  Levi gained some notoriety in 2008 as the boyfriend of Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol, once it was announced that Bristol was pregnant.  The pregnancy of conservative Palin’s unwed teenaged daughter made headlines around the world, sparking much debate and drawing even more attention to the Alaskan governor.   more »
