Good News and Bad News For Arctic Ice

Jul
31

The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has taken a new stance on the probability of an ice-free Arctic this year, saying that it is not likely that the North Pole will have completely open waters this September. While not directly linked, the two occurances are part of a larger pattern that sees the Arctic Cirlce becoming more militarized and more viewed for its oil and gas resources than at any point in memory. more »

Phtyoplankton and the Future of the Seas

Jul

A BBC news crew will be traveling with the Scottish Association of Marine Sciences (SAMS) as they try to look deeper into the nature of life in the seas of the Arctic Ocean, hoping to better be able to predict the changes that are likely to begin occurring in the oceans very soon. It turns out that the future of the planet may well rest with an organism too small to see with the naked eye: phytoplankton. more »

Northern Star Not Dying After All

Jul

Sometimes, things are not as they appear. In the past astronomers have been certain the Northern Star would eventually burn out.
