Russia wants to send more military soldiers to the Arctic region: Should they or shouldn’t they?

After intense political discussions, the five arctic countries including Canada agreed to lessen the amount of public speaking over their rival defensive claims in the polar region, a high-ranking Russian defense official has announced plans to strengthen his nation’s military presence in the far north. When two weeks ago they agreed to calm things down a bit, but now everything seems to be going the other way. When it comes to politics and the military it seems that things never go the way as planned. After a while, it gets frustrating when you see how your country and the countries around you are being affected by decisions that you have minimum control over.

A Lt.-General named Adimir Shamanov, who is head of the Russian military’s combat training, told the news media that his country was preparing to “increase their military operations and one of the operations which would be the Northern Fleet’s submarines” and this means that they have to increase and intensify the military activity of Russia‘s armed forces in the Arctic. Greenland and Denmark come to an agreement on Arctic oil profits

Copenhagen(Bloomberg News)- Denmark and Greenland agreed to divide future oil proceeds from the Arctic Island, which may hold reserves equivalent to those of the North Sea. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Denmark’s prime minister, and Hans Enoksen, the premier of Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous Danish territory, Friday signed an oil income agreement that also included steps toward increased independence for Greenland.

Russia and Norway Attempt to Cool Off Tensions

Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (BarentsObserver.com) says that the Norwegian Coast Guard’s inspections in the waters around Spitsbergen are “legitimate, unbiased and just”.

In a meeting with journalists in Kirkenes, Norway, today, he also reiterated the official Norwegian position on the area, arguing that international law gives Norway the full sovereignty over the waters. Russia and a number of other countries however continue to dispute the Norwegian view. more »
